Who we are
Shaka is an iOS app for wind-sport riders, published by Jim Laurie, an individual based in France (the “publisher”, “we”). This policy explains what data the app collects, why, and what your rights are. For any question, write to contact@getshaka.app.
What the app does
Shaka shows wind spots, forecasts and live wind stations on a map, records your sessions with a GPS track, saves the forecast that applied during each session, and lets you create alerts for conditions you like. You can use most of the app without creating an account.
Data we collect

Where your data goes
- Your data is stored on servers hosted in the European Union (Frankfurt). Daily encrypted backups are kept for 14 days.
- Apple Maps displays the map. Apple’s own privacy policy applies to map tiles.
- Photos: with your permission, the app can save session images and videos to your library. It does not read your library.
We do not sell your data, do not use advertising networks, and do not track you across other apps or websites.
Legal basis (GDPR)
We process your data to provide the service you ask for (contract), to keep the app working and secure (legitimate interest), and, for location and photo access, on the basis of the permissions you grant in iOS, which you can withdraw at any time in Settings.
How long we keep it
- Account data and sessions: as long as your account exists.
- When you delete your account from the app, your sessions, alerts, gear, profile and private spots are permanently deleted within 30 days. Spots you shared publicly stay available to the community without any link to you.
- Data recorded without an account stays on our servers under the anonymous identifier until you create an account or delete the app’s data.
- Live-sharing positions are deleted once the session has ended.
Your rights
You can access, correct, export or delete your data. Most of it is editable in the app, and Delete my account is available in the account screen. For anything else, or to object to a processing, email contact@getshaka.app. You can also lodge a complaint with your data-protection authority (in France, the CNIL).
Children
Shaka is not intended for children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect their data.
Changes
If this policy changes in a meaningful way, we will say so in the app. The date at the top tells you when it was last updated.
